Unwanted thoughts

Intrusive thoughts can be one of the most distressing experiences in pregnancy & postpartum.

We’ve all had intrusive thoughts at some point — maybe you don’t even remember, because they’re so fleeting. But in pregnancy and the time after birth, scary and unwanted thoughts often focus on the very thing that most upsets us: harm to the baby.

These thoughts are ego-dystonic, which just means they’re thoughts that make you uncomfortable because they don’t align with your true self, your values, or what you believe is right. That’s what can start a shame-filled spiral of worry and fear. We might try to push these thoughts away, or we put too much effort into avoiding things that seem dangerous or seeking reassurance. Here’s the truth though:

Intrusive thoughts are just a symptom — usually a sign
that you’re under stress, sleep-deprived, or experiencing anxiety.

And, there are ways we can understand and manage them. As scary as it can feel, talking to someone who understands intrusive thoughts is the best place to start.

Several of the therapists at the Terrace View Counseling Collaborative have experience working with individuals and families who’ve struggled with intrusive thoughts. Check out Our Therapists.

The volunteers at Perinatal Support of Washington and Postpartum Support International all receive training about intrusive thoughts, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and other common challenges. They can provide support, resources, and referrals.
